The police department was established in such countries to play a very vital role. It has greater responsibilities to undertake which is the maintenance of the safety of one society. It protects its people from crime and terrorism and ensures the peace and quiet country. At first, the police departments were only composed of human beings to do its big responsibilities. But then, later on as time passed by when the country is more cultured, there were police dogs involved in the police force which helped them make their job faster, easier and more effective. These police dogs are called K9 Units.
These police dogs are highly trained for police works and other difficult situations which only these specialized dogs are capable of doing the task. The most common and main purpose is the drug detection. Human police could hardly detect illegal drugs or if so but with the use of some technologies. However, there are still many occurrences that such drugs are not detected but with the sniffing ability of the police dogs, no illegal drugs could pass through. Its sniffing ability is also used up for detecting dangerous weapons such as explosives or bombs. These are illicit stuffs which are highly dangerous and which are carried usually by terrorists. Another task is finding suspects or escaped prisoners. To follow the trail of such criminals or people who had done something against the law, the K9 Units are then used to look for the run-away prisoner or suspect. Moreover, these dogs are not only used to look for criminals but to some missing persons or objects as well. Even the decomposed bodies are still sensed by these highly specialized dogs.
There are many popular breeds of dogs which are trained to become police dogs. Like for instance, Argentine Dogo which is usually trained for protecting human officer, commonly its partner, attacking other dogs, sniffing out drugs, explosives and foods. The German Shepherd is also similar to that of the Argentine Dogo’s tasks but usually German Shepherd are ground and air based tracking, locating human remains, EODs and some evidences which are used to solve some case. K9 Units are also composed of Belgian Malinois breed, Boxer, Labrador Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Springer Spaniel and so many others which have similar tasks such as protecting officer, attacking dogs, etc.
These dogs are very handy in such dilemma as it makes the search faster and faster. They are trained with specialized purposes which catered skills that are way beyond the human beings capabilities. Police dogs are almost the same as the human police officers and they are treated as such. They too, can get retirement if they are badly injured and can no longer perform well, when they get pregnant and are raising the puppies, when they are too old and when they are really sick.
In 1859, the European Continent had recognized the value and impotence of the official use of police dogs. It started out to notify its value as the Belgium Police in Ghent started to use the dog to patrol at night shifts. Due to such activity, trainings for canines had been focused and grew the population of the K9 Units with a lot of programmes had been introduced for such training and there was a rapid development in terms of dog training.
