The Miami police academy has a training center at Dade college school of justice in Miami. Applicants must contact the training center to enroll for the training classes. Each class of recruits has a training advisor, who takes them through training for 6 months. The training program is offered on part-time and full-time basis whereby training classes run from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.
The Miami Police department has a fitness center that provides its members with advanced training equipment which ensures that their physical fitness is in check. The fitness center is operational 24 hours every day of the week.
How to apply
Those who wish to apply for a chance at the police academy should go personally to the registrar’s office. They should also present the following documents:
• Completed student application form.
• A valid driving license from the state of Florida.
• Document that proves ones citizenship.
• Document proving that one has graduated from high school.
• Document proving that one has passed either Criminal Justice Basic Abilities test or Florida Basic Abilities test.
The training center has enhanced its efforts in providing in-service training of high quality to personnel in all departments as well as southern Florida’s officers, who are practicing law enforcement. The centers has also established many initiatives which include updating and computerizing training files, developing and implementing training videos that help the patrol officers gain survival techniques. Publication of curriculums and training guides as well as the establishment of a computer lab are among the initiatives made by the training center.
The training offered covers mandatory courses which include:
• Traffic crash & crime scene investigations
• Patrol procedures & DUI/Traffic stops
• Law &Law enforcement vehicle operations
• Firearms & Dart-firing stun gun
• Report writing & Communications
• First aid & Human issues
• Physical fitness & Defensive tactics
The recruitment of officers in law enforcement is only allowed to those who pass the exam that requires them to have full knowledge on the analysis of the job stated in the Florida statute 943.17(g). It is a must that all police recruits pass the mandatory exams set by the state for them to graduate in the courses that they take. After the police recruits successfully complete their classes at the police academy, they can now take the certification exam of the state of Florida.
Accomplishments of the Miami academy/training center
The center has many accomplishments so far. A few of the accomplishments include:
1. The center received a perfect audit for its training from the Florida department of law enforcement.
2. It started three police academy classes with 60 recruits out of the 229 who had applied.
3. Implemented a system that aimed at streamlining the process of admission to the police academy class.
4. It was certified as a veteran administration center.
5. Collaborated with universities such as Barry University, Thomas University and union institute and university to offer a chance for police officers who would want to further their education.
There are many other accomplishments not named above that make the Miami police academy one of the best in the region.
